Smart Car Digital Clock

SmartCar Digital Clock introduces a fun head unit experience in their rebranded design language.

Challenge
The smart car connected devices team wanted to redesign the digital clock app. As a consultant, I worked with the major stakeholders to align three product requirements:

1) Introduce the new smart car brand system
2) Adhere to the constraints of the current Smart Media-System, developed by their system partner, TomTom
3) Create a fun, engaging way to show the passage of time via day/night mode.

Driver Safety Compliance
While visual appeal was one of the success criteria, driver safety and usability remained the top requirements. Working with the team, the clock UI was designed to have:

1) Day/night mode that would change based on the time of day in order to reduce distraction while driving at night

2) Information with large text and designed for easy scanning

3) Large touch zones within less of an arm’s length of the driver.

Approach
Over the next two weeks, I worked closely with the software engineer to fully understand the constraints of the TomTom technology and what MVP product would be within scope. Unfortunately, since the TomTom system was a white label solution, the core stylesheets that defined font and button styles could not be modified.

Drawing inspiration from the brand identity, I incorporated the colors, the flat shapes, and the urban landscape into two distinct concept directions. Both concepts worked within the technical constraints and complied with driver safety regulations.
